The Phantom of the Opera drama by Sekolah Seri Cahaya

The students of Sekolah Seri Cahaya (SSC) had successfully staged its inaugural drama, The Phantom of the Opera to a packed-audience in all 4 days of their performance. This event was held on 17th, 18th 19th and 21st April 2008 in the schools state-of-the-art Hall of Character. More than 35 schools and 3000 students watched this drama. SSC had to turn-away some schools as the tickets were sold-out within a short period of time. Every detail of the great drama was not overlooked, as this play included professional stage props, beautiful costumes, live choir and instrumental performance by its students and great acting skills of professional standards despite the fact that none of the cast had any professional acting or musical training. Thunderous applause was heard after every scene and emotions from the casts are felt by the audience.

The performance was made even more challenging by making it a competition between Seri Cahaya and its sister school, Sekolah Seri Suria, which is also performing the same play title. Both schools' drama script is unique as they are not allowed to watch each others production.

Besides selling tickets of the play, the school also sold various Phantom of the Opera merchandise such as shirt, key-chain, fan and sun-shield. On top of that, this live presentation was extra meaningful as all profits from the production by Seri Cahaya would be channeled to the "National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM)" in conjunction with the World Autism Awareness Day.

Most importantly, this drama showcase the believe of REAL Education Group where 'lessons' are brought outside the classroom environment and not confine to getting straight 'As' only. The students involved in the drama said they gain a lot from this experienced as they develop confidence, teamwork, perseverance, dedication and passion. It also gives an inspiration and encouragement to those not involved in the drama that they too can do the impossible. There is no doubt the next drama presentation will draw even more students to participate.

The high standard of performance has allowed Sekolah Seri Cahaya to win two of the four prizes of the competition, which are 'Most Outstanding Character Award' given to Aaron Ee in an amazing portrayal as Monsieur Armand and 'Drama Challenge Trophy' for the overall performance of The Phantom of the Opera.

We would like to congratulate all the casts and crews in making this drama presentation a memorable one for years to come.

The Heart of REAL Education

Sekolah Seri Cahaya, Shah Alam and Sekolah Seri Suria, Hulu Langat are both the flagship schools of the REAL Education Group of Learning Centres with Kindergartens, Primary and Secondary School education. Founded by 3 friends with a common zest for quality private education more than 20 years ago, the same passion has caused them today to be at the forefront and be directly involved in steering their education group towards realisation of their passion. Taking cognisance of the fact that our children are our future, the company's mission is to "Transform Lives through REAL Education". The educational philosophy of the group, REAL is the acronym for "Result Enhancing through Active Learning". It is in line with the philosophy of the group, headed by our founder and CEO, Mr. Sim Quan Seng that teaching is more than just a dispensation of knowledge; it is in fact about the utilisation of knowledge.

What sets us apart from other educational providers is our REAL curriculum which is based on an insistence to change our schools from a 'teaching environment' into a 'learning environment'. This is done via our specialised teaching methodologies which were designed to activate our multiple intelligences. "We believe that once our hidden potentials are unlocked and unleashed, the future of our children, the next generation becomes immeasurable", according to Mr. Ee Ching Wah, the Executive Director of the group.

At both our schools, the REAL philosophy is translated into our curriculum, being the national KBSR and KBSM curriculum. In addition, the school has modified the curriculum to include internationally recognised syllabus including the Cambridge syllabus in selected areas to challenge our high achievers. Whilst we motivate and guide our students to achieve academic excellence via our REAL syllabus, seen in the sterling results achieved yearly at the UPSR, PMR and SPM results, we believe that our main task is to constantly challenge our students to attain results one notch higher than their natural ability. "In fact we are proud to state that an 'A' student is pushed to challenge themselves based on the Internationally recognised syllabus including the Cambridge syllabus whilst our 'B' students are challenged to attained an 'A', our 'C' students, a 'B' and so forth" according to our General Manager, Mr. Felix Lee who has with him more than 15 years of experience in private education. In both the schools, tuition is already incorporated into the school curriculum, thereby eliminating the 'tuition' syndrome and problems afflicting teachers in which our Government is seeking to eradicate.

At the REAL Education Group of Learning Centres, our focus does not lie purely in academia as our students are exposed to the other facets of life, true to our beliefs of exposing our children to various learning experiences and environment. Presentation skills as well as oratory skills are also an important component of the syllabuses at the REAL schools along with exposure to music, art and drama. In fact, in line with our continual search for new standards in quality private educate, even our music syllabus has been modified to enable our students to sit for the ABRSM examinations. We would also be putting up a public drama presentation following the English and Bahasa Melayu literature text from next year onwards as this exposure would indirectly educate our children about perseverance, team-work, confidence, public speaking and of course the ability to understand the literature in question in greater depth.

REAL Education is in fact one of the largest owner-operated integrated educational service provider from pre-school to tertiary education to post graduate and training modules, not only in Malaysia but in fact in this region. This is achieved through our 33 owner operated Kindergartens nationwide, to our 2 flagship schools, Sekolah Seri Suria and Sekolah Seri Cahaya; to our college of Higher Education, ALFA International College, a college renowned for its excellence in Architecture, Interior Architecture, Graphic and Multimedia Studies. With more than 20 years of experience and a staff force of more than 700, and with our centres being ISO certified, it is no wonder that the REAL Education Group is quickly emerging as one of the top providers of private education in Malaysia and this region.

The popularity of our curriculum, making our schools synonymous with a quality private education provider stems with our insistence in certain basic values which we inculcate in all our students steadfastly. This is seen in the recent launching of "Character First" programme for ALL our staff officiated by YB Tan Sri Dato Lee Lam Thye in August 2007 and attended by all the key staff of the REAL Education Group. It is our belief that if our educators are beholden to the values embedded in the seminar that it would slowly be passed on to our students as well. Discipline is also a very high priority for our children as it is compulsory for them to participate in one of the uniformed units in the schools including the Boy & Girl Scouting Movement, Boy's Brigade and the St. John's Ambulance or the Red Crescent.

The group is in fact currently collaborating with the "Toastmasters International" to train all our teachers to become Toastmasters as it is our fervent belief that presentation skills are of comparative importance to academic excellence" adds Mr. Felix Lee.

"We believe that our leaders must be exceptional individuals excelling in academia as well as in character, public relation, oratory and more importantly to be able to adapt and react based on any given situations. For we believe that exceptional leaders are not born but led. Experienced and caring teachers dedicated to our REAL curriculum have been guiding our protégés for more than 20 years since we opened our doors to private education. We are fuelled by passion and run by passion. In this world of competitiveness, not any education for your child will do, get REAL education." Mr. Felix adds.

Our enrolment of more than 2000 students in our schools is itself testimony of the success of our brand and style of private education. In fact, the REAL Education Group of Learning Centres extends to pre-school education as well where the group is in fact the largest owner-operated Kindergarten, with 33 centres across the nation, from up north in Penang to Johore Bahru and even in Sabah. With our specially designed REAL curriculum, our group of Kindergartens is also the first Kindergarten in Malaysia to be certified ISO 9001:2000, a fact recorded in the Malaysian Book of Records. Our 5000 strong enrolment in our group of Kindergartens bears testimony not only to the success of the REAL education curriculum but also as to its popularity with parents in Malaysia. The reason is obvious, as alluded by the passion of our CEO, Mr.Sim for education when he states proudly that, "Our centres are operated as schools first and profit centres second as our children are our future."

Sekolah Seri Suria will be conducting an open day on 22nd & 23rd September 2007 from 10.00am to 4.00pm whilst Sekolah Seri Cahaya on 20th October 2007 from 9.00am to 5.30pm.

The REAL Difference

"In the competitive world of private education, both private colleges as well as private schools in Malaysia battle to out do each other by having an array of activities and programme in their quest to maintain a competitive edge. The inclusion of Mandarin and the provision of piano, guitar and violin classes are no longer the differential advantages of the school but rather the norm," according to their General Manager of the REAL Education Group, Mr. Felix Lee.

Mr Felix Lee
What sets us apart from other educational providers is our REAL curriculum which is based on an insistence to change our schools from a 'teaching environment' into a 'learning environment'. This is done via our specialised teaching methodologies which were designed to activate our multiple intelligences. "We believe that once our hidden potentials are unlocked and unleashed, the future of our children, the next generation becomes immeasurable", he continues.

In addition to the KBSR and KBSM curriculum, the school has modified the curriculum to include internationally recognised syllabus including the Cambridge syllabus in selected areas to challenge our high achievers. Whilst we motivate and guide our students to achieve academic excellence via our REAL syllabus, seen in the sterling results achieved yearly at the UPSR, PMR and SPM results, we believe that our main task is to constantly challenge our students to attain results one notch higher than their natural ability. "In fact we are proud to state that an 'A' student is pushed to challenge themselves based on the Internationally recognised syllabus including the Cambridge syllabus whilst our 'B' students are challenged to attained an 'A', our 'C' students, a 'B' and so forth," Mr.Lee adds. In both the schools, tuition is already incorporated into the school curriculum, thereby eliminating the 'tuition' syndrome and problems afflicting teachers in which our Government is seeking to eradicate.

The educational philosophy of the group, REAL is the acronym for "Result Enhancing through Active Learning" At the REAL Schools, namely Seri Suria, Hulu Langat and Seri Cahaya, Shah Alam, our approach is to provide a proper and strong foundation for our children. It is the belief of the group that the character of the children takes greatest priority as it is their character which moulds their beliefs and carves their personalities. Under the leadership of the group's founder and CEO, Mr.Sim Quan Seng, the REAL Education group has over the past three months invested more than RM100,000 with the 'Character First institute' to infuse character building in all 700 of their staffs and more than 7000 of their students. The philosophy behind this move is the belief that 'Character determines Success' and as such, the group is adamant in infusing such virtues in all their students. This steadfast belief of the group culminated in the launch of the recently completed RM5 million ringgit school block comprising of the new multipurpose hall at Seri Cahaya aptly named, the 'Hall of Character' on 3rd November 2007. The construction of the new block in itself reflected the character value of 'endurance' defined as 'the inward strength to withstand stress and do my best' as it was completed in merely 100 days, a testimony of the group's steadfast beliefs.

Apart from 'character building', the full execution of our REAL curriculum in 2008 would also see the implementation of Presentation Skills through our collaboration with the Toastmasters International, both facets or our twin pillars to REAL Education. Character building and motivation seminars would be conducted to ensure that all our students would be imbued with the necessary attitudes both in school and outside of school.

Presentation skills would also be featured largely in our curriculum where the next academic year 2008 would see the school giving greater emphasis on class presentations skills rather than the vastly non effective monthly examinations which merely promulgates a culture of mugging in the students. In addition, the schools will also introduce 'Free speech Mondays' where students are allowed to ask or speak on any issues which come to mind, to be regulated by the Principals. The highlight of the 2008 curriculum is the commencement of our drama presentations by the REAL Schools, to be open to the public. The intention is to mould in our students virtues like confidence, co-operation, presentation skills, perseverance as well as the improvement of the English language. This move will enable the students, parents as well as the general public to witness the secondary school literature text, like the popular "Phantom of the Opera" and "Dr.Jekyll & Mr.Hyde" coming to life at our schools.

In fact, in line with our continual search for new standards in quality private education, even our music syllabus has been modified to enable our students to sit for the ABRSM examinations. Our students are also exposed to basic computers skills including basic programming, use of Microsoft office as well as flash. Our intention is to equip our students with the necessary skills for the working environment. Mr. Felix explains that the belief is, instead of providing a never ending array of activities, we prefer to modify the existing ones to achieve a result which benefits our students in the working environment and later in life, generally. Unlike most of the other private schools which concentrates largely in academia alone, our beliefs is to mould our children to have the proper 'character' and 'presentation skills' to transform them into 'effective communicators'.

Discipline is also a very high priority for our children as it is compulsory for them to participate in one of the uniformed units in the schools including the Boy & Girl Scouting Movement, Boy's Brigade and the St. John's Ambulance or the Red Crescent.
